Flexible environments and new technologies

Secure Hypervisor Environments

There is still this conception that the hypervisor (or VMM) may not be secure—where the storage has had 10+ years to prove it out. That is changing. There are things happening. There are some new technologies now available that allow the same level of privacy and segregation to a multitenant hypervisor in a dedicated server in a computer room.

Hypervisor definition: in a physical server, with Windows, you can run one instance of Windows. A hypervisor sits between the physical server and the operating system and emulates the processor in a virtual way. You can now have 10 instances of an operating system running on the same CPU—none of the 10 knows that the other nine exist by virtue of being isolated by the hypervisor.

Some examples: VM ware, Microsoft HyperV etc , Citrix, Red Hat—KPM? There are four predominant players.

A hybrid model

Why co-locate with ThinkOn?—national platform. Distance, diversity. If the primary is in one place, disaster recovery won’t be in there. National footprint means you can deploy a combination of dedicated hardware and co-location attached to the Cloud. Most only do Cloud—if you are a $500 million company, you can’t do all on Cloud. One thing is certain though: our entire cloud is in Canada.

Smart design standards: you don’t want to under build co-location, don’t want to under power or under cool. So you have the right amount of power and support.
